by Mardi Allen, Life Coach, Mardi@CoachMardi.netAvoid Holiday Burnout
During the holidays self-care tends to go on the back burner, especially for women.? In my years of coaching and consulting I have had people who postpone their self-care, coaching, dieting, and exercising until January.? The next time I see them; they are completely burnt out and have put on an additional 10 pounds.
Self-care is always important, however it essential during the holiday season from Halloween through New Year?s. There is no need to put self-care on the back burner!? Consistency is key! We are no good to anyone if we are not taking care of ourselves.? I encourage you to rethink this unhealthy habit and commit to keeping yourself balanced and stress free.
Give yourself permission to eliminate or minimize the pressure and stress of the holidays and truly enjoy family and friends. When we are taking care of ourselves we are better mates, moms, daughters, friends, bosses, workers, and volunteers. Self-care is an important part of stress management and it is essential to having a balanced life. It helps eliminate anxiety and contributes to your well being and should not be compromised.? Here are some tools to practice self-care and to maintain balance.
1.?? ?Commit to being consistent with nurturing yourself throughout the year and especially through the holidays. No excuses. Make sure to take at least five minutes a day for ?me time,? preferably more.? Make it a priority. Habits come from the things we do consistently so create healthy habits.
2.?? ?Make sure to pray, meditate, read, affirm, visualize, journal, exercise, walk, and stretch.
3.?? ?Get plenty of sleep.? When you are rested you are better equipped to deal with the stresses of the holidays.
4.?? ?Remember, life is a process and not about perfection. Set healthy boundaries. It is okay to say ?no.? Don?t over commit. Before committing to any event, make sure it works for you in your schedule.
5.?? ?Ask for help and solicit others to help with the work as well as the fun. You do not have to be super woman and do everything by yourself. Get others involved.
6.?? ?Prepare and plan. Have healthy foods prepared so you have the energy needed to sustain you for those long days of shopping. Shop early so you are not stressed out at the last minute.? Don?t forget to schedule your ?me time? daily!
7.?? ? Remember what the holidays are really about?love, joy, and peace.
