Week-old giant panda cub born at the National Zoo dies

By Associated Press

The giant panda cub born a week ago at the National Zoo in Washington has died, and it was not immediately known why the animal died, zoo officials said Sunday.?

Zoo officials said in a press release that the cub was found dead Sunday morning after panda keepers heard sounds of distress from its mother, Mei Xiang.

Staffers were able to retrieve the cub about an hour later. The cub appeared to be in good condition, and there were no outward signs of trauma or infection.

The cub had been a surprise at the zoo. Fourteen-year-old Mei Xiang had five failed pregnancies before giving birth, and only one panda cub has survived at the zoo in the past.

Panda cubs are born about the size of a stick of butter and are delicate infants. Panda mothers are about 1,000 times heavier than their cubs, which are born with their eyes closed. The delicate cubs have died in the past when accidentally crushed by mom. That happened in two different zoos in China in 2009 and 2010 when mothers killed their young while attempting to nurse.

The zoo's first panda couple, Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing, arrived from China in 1972 and had five cubs during the 1980s, but none lived more than a few days. One of the cubs was stillborn, two others died of pneumonia within a day, another died from lack of oxygen after birth, and the final cub died of an infection after four days.

Panda experts have said the first weeks of life are critical for the panda cubs as mothers have to make sure they stay warm and get enough to eat.

"It's kind of a nerve-racking period for the folks that are monitoring mom and cub," Rebecca Snyder, the curator of mammals at Atlanta's zoo, said last week. Atlanta is one of only two other American zoos to have had cubs.

Atlanta has had three cubs, and the San Diego zoo has had six, including a cub born this year. A panda couple in Memphis has yet to have a cub, despite several tries. No other U.S. zoos have pandas.

The cub had not yet been named in accordance with Chinese tradition ? it was to receive a name after 100 days on Dec. 24. Had the cub survived until then, it would have been roughly the size of a loaf of bread and weighed around 10 pounds.

McGraw attacks Morrisey staffer at parade

MILTON -- Republican Attorney General candidate Patrick Morrisey's campaign says incumbent Darrell McGraw attacked one of its staffers Saturday.

The incident occurred in Milton at the city's annual Pumpkin Festival Parade. The Morrisey campaign also released a video of the incident that involved McGraw and 24-year-old Morrisey staffer Justin Lafferty from Logan.

To watch the video, click here.

"The incident occurred at 10:40 a.m. while Lafferty was filming McGraw as he spoke to voters," a press release from Morrisey's campaign said. "As Lafferty filmed, McGraw quickly reached out, ripped the camera from Justin's hand, turning off the power in the process and tearing the strap holding the camera."

Morrisey campaign manager Scott Will said Saturday afternoon that Lafferty filmed from a comfortable distance and that he did not engage McGraw verbally. Lafferty was only within arms length because McGraw approached him, the release said.

According to Will, both the McGraw and Morrisey campaigns have filmed their opponents in public settings. And he said Morrisey has said that his campaign will continue to film McGraw until the incumbent agrees to public debates.

"Given McGraw's unwillingness to debate, we want to ensure that the public fully appreciates the incumbent's inability to answer questions without pre-scripted responses written by staff," Will said Saturday. "Sadly, Darrell McGraw is proving that he too will have his own 'Scream at Racine' moment."

He refers a 2004 speech given by McGraw's brother Warren, who was then running for re-election to the state Supreme Court. Warren McGraw gave a speech in Racine at a United Mine Workers Labor Day rally that many credit with aiding in his defeat to Brent Benjamin.

"What Attorney General McGraw did today was way out of bounds and shows that he's become unhinged," Will said. "Voters have a right to see their candidates participate in public debates, mainly because it allows them to engage in a discussion on ideas and experience."

Will also said debates give voters "a chance to view each candidate's temperament."

McGraw has refused every public debate and now we know why," Will said. "He no longer possesses the judgment, maturity or restraint to serve as our state's chief law enforcement officer."

In the video, McGraw also is shown talking to Republican House of Delegates candidate Joyce Holland about President Obama before walking away from her and stating, "That poor woman is so deceitful."

He also accuses Holland of talking to him solely to get him filmed by Lafferty.

"He's not welcome to use my physiognomy in this," McGraw said, referring to Lafferty's video. He then walks toward state Treasurer John Perdue and Agriculture Commissioner candidate Walk Helmick. McGraw then accuses Lafferty of being a stalker before the video abruptly ends.

Calls to McGraw's campaign have not been returned.

A longer "raw" cut of the video can be seen here.

Suicide bomber kills 2, injures 46 in Nigeria

BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) ? A suicide car bomber attacked a Catholic church conducting Mass in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing two people and wounding another 46 in a region under assault by a radical Islamist sect, officials said.

An Associated Press journalist heard the explosion after 9 a.m. Sunday in the city of Bauchi, which has seen a number of bombings and shootings blamed on the sect known as Boko Haram. The blast appeared to hit a parking lot alongside the St. John's Catholic Church in the city.

Police and military surrounded the church and did not allow journalists inside the cordon. Later at a nearby hospital, Bauchi deputy police commissioner T. Stevens told journalists told that the bomber had been stopped at the church's gate, where he detonated the explosives packed inside his car.

Doctors cautioned more could die from their injuries.

"The situation has been brought under control," Stevens said. "We have our men minding all areas."

Stevens said no group or individual had claimed responsibility for the attack, though suspicion immediately fell on Boko Haram. The sect, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's north, has been waging an increasingly bloody fight against nation's weak central government. More than 680 people have died in drive-by killings and bombings blamed on Boko Haram this year alone, according to an AP count. The sect has demanded the release of all its captive members and has called for strict Shariah law to be implemented across the entire country.

The sect has used suicide car bombs against churches in the past, most noticeably a 2011 Christmas Day attack on a Catholic church in Madalla near Nigeria's capital. That attack and assaults elsewhere in the country killed at least 44 people. An unclaimed car bombing on Easter in Kaduna killed at least 38 people on a busy roadway after witnesses say it was turned away from a church.

Attacks against churches by the sect have waned in recent weeks. Nigeria's military claimed it killed the sect's spokesman and a commander Sept. 17 outside the city of Kano, potentially shaking up a sect that has continued attacks despite a tighter military presence in northern cities.

The killing of members of the sect's senior leadership comes as the group recently changed some of its tactics and attacked more than 30 mobile phone towers throughout northern Nigeria, disrupting communications in a nation reliant on cellular phones.

Saturday night, the military conducted door-to-door searches in the northern cities of Damaturu and Potiskum, areas now under a 24-hour curfew that have been hard-hit by the sect.
